Types of ADA Tiles

This summary of the different types of ADA detectable warning tiles, how they’re installed, and their beneficial features will help you as you install, maintain, or replace the existing ADA materials at your business or for your clients.

Surface Applied Tiles

Engineered for retrofitting into any existing concrete surfaces without disturbing the concrete, surface applied truncated dome tiles and wayfinding bars are cost effective, durable, and wear-resistance. This makes them a good choice to quickly bring sites up to meet ADA detection warning requirements.

Applications

Surface applied tiles can easily be installed in a variety of spaces and areas including:

  • Transit Platforms
  • Parking Areas
  • ADA Curb Ramps
  • Pedestrian Crosswalks
  • Escalator Approaches and Exits
  • Shipping and Delivery Areas
  • Top/Bottom of Stair Landings and Wheelchair Ramps

Applications for Truncated Domes:
  • Retrofit curb ramps so they correctly align with already built ADA compliant crosswalks.
  • Use their raised dome patterns to alert pedestrians to areas where there is no curb, wheelchair ramp, ADA ramp, or stairs.
  • Warn against unprotected drop off edges such as train platforms, curb drop-offs, unprotected pool edges, and slopes with a steep grade of a ratio of 1:3 (33%).
  • Use in large open floor areas, such as shopping malls, warehouses, or transportation terminals.
  • When using inside large spaces, wayfinding bars should lead from the entrance to major destinations throughout the space including restrooms, information booths or reception areas, stairways, elevators, and escalators, service areas, classrooms, and in the case of shopping areas, stores.

Features
  • Some tiles are designed with beveled edges for a strong fit and a smooth transition between the concrete and truncated domes.
  • Various manufacturers have engineered a unique sound reflection when the tile is tapped with a cane, making it easy for the user to distinguish the difference between a walkway and the ADA-compliant tile.
  • Lightweight but extremely durable
  • Tiles are weather and wear resistant
  • This ADA compliant product is cost effective
  • Tiles are easy to handle, and can be easily cut into various shapes and fit radius ramps

Installation

Easy retrofit installation into any concrete surface using anchors, stainless steel pins, and Tactile Bond and Seal adhesive.

Cast in Place Tiles

These tactile detectable warning tiles are easily installed into wet-set concrete, making it a cost-effective to become ADA compliant. Manufactured with a diamond-hard vitrified polymer composite, cast in place truncated pavers are weather and wear resistant.

Applications

Use cast in place tiles in public, private, and government places to alert blind or visually impaired people to changes in pedestrian walkways and crossings, turning unsafe paths into safe ADA compliant pathways.

With their truncated dome pattern, these detectable warning cast in place tiles and directional bar tiles are securely installed in a variety of spaces and areas during construction including:

  • Parking Garages
  • Transit Platforms
  • Curb Ramps
  • Pedestrian Crosswalks
  • Shipping and Delivery Areas
  • Top/Bottom of Stair Landings and Wheelchair Ramps

Applications for Truncated Domes:

  • Create ADA compliant curb ramps where there were none.
  • Use their raised dome patterns to make pedestrians aware of areas where there is no curb, wheelchair ramp, or stairs, creating dangerous intersections.
  • Turn dangerous unprotected drop-offs into accessible, safe spaces.

Features
  • An advanced warning strip (3”x48”) creates a clear color contrast around the truncated domes tile perimeter.
  • These tiles sustain dynamic vehicle loading and passes the AASHTO HS20-44-wheel load test with ease.
  • Some manufacturers have engineered a unique sound reflection when the tile is tapped with a cane, making it easy for the user to distinguish the difference between a walkway and the ADA-compliant tile.

Installation
Cast in place detectable warning tiles utilize integral embedment flanges as a complete anchoring system. This allows the wet concrete to flow through the anchoring system, locking it into place when the concrete sets. Meanwhile, smaller bleeder holes allow for any trapped air to escape, ensuring a flush installation.

Replaceable Detectable Warning Tiles

Replacement warning tiles are manufactured from a polymer composite that creates an extremely durable, weather and wear resistance warning surface and ADA compliant tile. The cost-effective innovative design and fabrication installs easily and quickly, providing easy access for maintenance and replacement, if needed.

  • See our trusted supplier’s free radius calculator to determine the number of detectable warning pavers for your project.

Wayfinding Tiles

Unlike all the ADA detectable warning tiles listed above, wayfinding tiles, also called directional bar strips, do not have truncated dome patterns. Instead, these directional bars are used to create non-visual but highly tactile directional paths. When paired with truncated dome tiles, this combination guides visually impaired people independently along fully accessible routes in any space.

Following a directional path of highly tactile raised strips laid at the start and end of college hallways, sidewalks, transit stations, and other locations allow blind and visually impaired to go about their daily lives unaided and independently.

As a cost-effective ADA solution, directional tiles work for retrofitting and new construction.

Manufactured out of innovative diamond-hard vitrified polymer composite, wayfinding tiles are designed to be long-lasting, weather and wear resistance.
